General Technical Safety Awareness Course

  • As an instructional designer, I've always been driven by the challenge of creating learning experiences that are not only engaging but also relevant to the learner's context. At Siemens Gamesa, a global leader in wind power solutions, this challenge took on a life-and-death significance when I was tasked with developing a General Safety Awareness Course.

The course was required as we needed a more general safety course that covered some of our current safety training gaps. Safety, especially in the energy sector, is not just about compliance; it's about ensuring that every individual returns home safely at the end of the day. The gravity of this responsibility was never lost on me, and it became the cornerstone of my design philosophy for this project.

Education Instructional:

  • Develop a comprehensive Educational Instructional (EI) blueprint for every project, detailing essential elements like content, scope, and timeline.

Collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and project managers to deeply understand the project's goals and optimal content delivery strategies.

Use the EI to maintain design consistency, map content effectively, and clarify learner engagement strategies.

Prioritize early feedback using the blueprint, reducing development uncertainties and ensuring alignment with client visions and expectations.

Visual Storyboard:

  • Present a foundational draft created in PowerPoint capturing the essential structure and content areas.

Utilize placeholders and anticipate further refinements in the storyboard for aligning stakeholders to the project's vision.

Detail the script and descriptions of intended visual/interactive elements for better visualization.

Development:

  • Rely on pre-mapped content and expertise in Storyline functionality for course creation.

Maintain a unified course aesthetic using consistent slide templates and design elements.

Enhance learner engagement by integrating interactive features and multimedia.

Ensure knowledge retention with quizzes and assessments at predetermined intervals.

Make It Stand Out:

  • Partner with graphic designers to craft a unique and realistic visual aesthetic for the training.

Prioritize design elements that enhance both memorability and learner retention.

Consistently aim for captivating visuals in projects to leave a lasting impact on learners.

Results and Takeaways:

  • Received positive reviews from peers and participants, particularly noting its aesthetic, engaging interactions, and educational strategy.

Successfully addressed all the safety training deficiencies present in the General Safety Awareness Course.

The triumph of the course reflects the commitment and proficiency of my SMEs and project manager, ensuring a seamless match with their goals and vision.
